When you have kids raised in a home filled with sociopaths that don't encourage you to study, burn a sick cat in a bonfire or show pornography to a child, then kids will turn to drugs to escape their harmed childhood. You can reduce drug abuse just by telling kids about morals, what is right and wrong and then give them counselling. I would speak out about animal torture and other abuse that happened but I had no idea it was wrong. And then everyone wondered why I couldn't succeed in school.

Ah, the drug problem. If you want to kids to stay away from crack, legalize weed and other mild drugs. That's one of the factors that could make people to rather choose something legal over illegal stuff. Another benefit is reduced crime rates. When people switched to kava-kava in Vanuatu, crime rates went down. Alcohol will never achieve this. And most important is that you have to raise kids into nice humans in a nice family with efficient parenting techniques. No spanking and other bullshit.

I hope they won't blew it. They need to look at Japan or France first. High-speed rail only works for city to city. For continental travel its not a good thing if you want to save time. But if you commute for 20 or 40 miles on a highway each day to work, then high-speed rail is a good thing. At least it could reduce road fatalities and injuries. Cars still have poor safety standards. No roll over protection, seat belts that won't save you, people thinking unstable SUVs are suitable for racing.

@timray99 I don't think planes use less energy. You have to count efficiency per kilometers traveled, speed, time saved or per passenger. But I don't know any numbers, so I wonder which is efficient. Planes could be faster but trains can transfer far more passengers per train.

High-speed rail is a money pit of wasteful spending. Who really is going to ride this shit? It only makes sense in a couple of corridors and if it makes sense, the government shouldn't have to shell the money out for it. I would like to see a strong nuclear back bone that would support a system of mag lev block trams that would make it possible to reduce the trucking industry to a range of 200 miles. Then see hybrid/electric semis for the shag trucking lines so truckers can be home more. I would also like to see a ETT system. Evacuated tube transport with a national highway system built in tunnels. It could also have applications for irrigation and flood control if built right. Not to mention the weather...
